FAQ'S RELATED TO SCHOOL CLOSURE DUE TO COVID-19

What does virtual learning mean for my student?

    • Premier High School has the benefit of moving all of our students from Knowledge Units to Online courses so that the learning of our students is not interrupted. While there are other tools like Google Classroom, Zoom Meetings, Google Hangouts, etc. that our teachers will be exploring please rest assured that students can continue to move through their coursework through our Buzz Learning Management system. The important thing is for students to login and communicate with their teachers every day.

Will my student need to reschedule their STAAR test?

    • No. As per the Texas Governor, Greg Abbott, announcement the week of March 23rd, 2020, the Governor waived the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) testing requirements for the 2019-2020 school year so schools can focus on staying protected from the coronavirus COVID-19.
    • Students that earned the course credit on the 2019-2020 will not have to take the STAAR test.

My student is a retester, are they exempt?

    • No. Students that were scheduled to retest will be scheduled to take the STAAR test in the next offering date.

My student is a Senior and still needs a STAAR test? Will this prevent them from graduating?

    • No. Seniors that are scheduled to graduate will be scheduled to receive an Individual Graduation Committee meeting in order to still meet graduation requirements without having to take the STAAR. We will be reaching out to our Seniors to help them through graduation completion requirements.

My student was scheduled to take the SAT, what happens now?

    • Currently, the SAT test has been postponed. We will provide our students with more information as it becomes available.

How will COVID-19 impact graduation ceremonies, requirements, and the end of the school year calendar? Will we need to add days to the end of the school year?

    • The Texas Education Agency (TEA) said they will provide guidance during the upcoming weeks. We will update this page when we know more.

What school cleaning procedures are in place to guard against COVID-19?

    • ResponsiveEd is following the guidance of the CDC to prepare for and respond to the evolving COVID-19 situation.

Meal Options During Campus Closure

If your family has an interest in meal service during the closure, the TEA has informed us that one or more meals will be provided to your child each weekday at no cost. Information regarding specific meal locations. Please monitor your campus Facebook page for information regarding specific meal locations.

Free Internet Offers

Two Internet Service Providers (ISP) are providing free, trial internet to homes who may not have access.

Comcast is offering:

  • Sixty (60) days of free Internet Essentials service, which is normally available to all qualified low-income households for $9.95/month.
  • For new customers, applicants can simply visit www.internetessentials.com (website includes written and video chat customer service options) or by calling 1-855-846-8376 (English) or 1-855-765-6995 (Spanish).

Spectrum is offering:

  • Sixty (60) days free broadband and Wi-Fi access for households with K-12 and/or college students who don’t already have a Spectrum broadband subscription.
  • No installation fees for new households.
  • Enroll by calling 1-844-488-8395.

What is COVID-19?

COVID-19 is a respiratory illness that can spread from person to person. The virus that causes COVID-19 was first identified during an investigation into an outbreak in Wuhan, China. Currently, the CDC reports several cases in the United States, including Texas.

What are the symptoms of COVID-19?

Patients with COVID-19 have had mild to severe respiratory illness with symptoms of:

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath

How is the COVID-19 virus spread?

According to the CDC, the virus that causes COVID-19 belongs to a family of viruses called “coronavirus.” There are other viruses in the coronavirus family that can cause illness in both humans and animals. These viruses can cause either mild illness like a cold or can make people very sick with pneumonia. This particular coronavirus has not been seen previously in humans. The virus is likely to be spread from person to person. Since the virus is very new, health authorities continue to carefully watch how this virus spreads.

How will I know if I or my children have the flu or COVID-19?

While both these illnesses are respiratory viruses with symptoms of fever and a cough, it is recommended that anyone experiencing these symptoms visit a healthcare provider.

Reminder of Prevention Measures

While we continue to follow the CDC’s recommended steps to protect against the virus, we are also carefully monitoring announcements from local, state, and federal officials. Much of the most recent guidance for prevention involves avoiding crowds and spending less time in public. This is in addition to ongoing best practices for safeguarding oneself against the spread of COVID-19 such as:

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
  • Do not eat or drink after others.
